Organizational change The movement of an organization away from its present state and toward some preferred future state to increase its efficiency and effectiveness. Companies can lose this control over time, as happened to Toyota, discussed in the opening case or they can change in ways that make them more effective, as happened to UPS and Walmart. One of these problems is that an organization cannot change or adapt in response to a changing environment unless it has effective control over its activities. As we have discussed, many problems can arise if an organization's control systems are not designed correctly.
